STOP! BEFORE YOU CHOP, PRUNE or TRIM!

Spring is nesting season for birds. They start nesting from August and can nest right through to January, depending on the species of bird, the eggs hatch during that period and Mum & Dad are busy feeding.

In a two week period 11 chicks - 3 different species - had been brought into care through their trees being cut down. Very tiny and very distressed. One can only imagine what it is like for the parents to not only have their babies disappear but to have their tree disappear at the same time. In all likelihood they would have been nesting in that same tree for years. It can take up to 100 years for a natural hollow to form in a tree.

A good thing would be to leave any pruning etc until after spring, perhaps late summer, autumn or winter. This includes pruning creepers and vines. Small birds use these as nesting sites.

Once the nesting site has gone, it will never be replaced. More and more birds and possums are being dispossessed through tree lopping or by trees being cut down and land clearing for development.
